To go to A Coruña and not take a photo of the famous glass galleries on the Avenida de la Marina is almost impossible. These glassed-in white balconies, some made of wood and others of iron, were built in the 19th century and are, in fact, the rear part of houses. The idea to enclose the balconies in glass began in the city of Ferrol after sheets of glass were used to close off the bows of the fishing boats: in the buildings, the glass provided protection against the rain gave the interiors more light and heat in winter.
