I don’t think it’s any local tradition but rather a 100% tourist attraction, but if you go to Funchal, I recommend that you get onto one of its famous wicker toboggan sleds. You go up to the highest part of a mountain and from there the carreiros, islanders dressed in white, drive the big sled full of tourists on a road down the mountainside. It’s about two kilometres to the bottom, and while you may be frightened a few times, it’s perfectly safe.
