A trip to Bilbao is recommended any time of the year, but my last visit coincided with the celebration for Santa Águeda and that added something very special. The night before, a number of choral groups move through the city offering chants to the saint and dressed in their typical costumes, rhythmically stomping on the ground with the intention, I was told, of awakening the already imminent fertility of spring. It’s wonderful to come across the singers in the narrow streets of the Old Town and even inside a txoko: a moving experience of an old but very lively tradition.
