If you’re planning to spend a few days in Almería, don’t forget the Alpujarra region. Travelling through the white villages at the foot of the Sierra Nevada will transport you centuries back in time. It was in one of these towns, Fuente Victoria, where the last Moorish king of Granada, Boabdil, took refuge after being defeated by the Christians. Canyájar is another of the high points along the route. The orchards, which are watered by the centuries-old irrigation channels that surround the town, make it a real garden.
