I am Love opens with some panoramic shots of Milan in winter, with its modern buildings covered in snow. Not by chance the heroine is called Emma (played by Tilda Swinton), and just like another well-known Emma –Bovary– she is smothered in an asphyxiating marriage. I am Love is a sumptuous, sensual film, a melodrama that describes the growing passion of this women of the Milanese haute bourgeoisie in her adulterous affair with a young man. The film captures to perfection the luxurious life of this business elite: the interiors of the family home were shot at Villa Necchi Campiglio, an impressive estate that, in fact, belonged to a rich dynasty of the city, the Necchis, and is now open to the public. One of the climactic moments of the film takes place in the city’s Monumental Cemetery, specifically in its Famedio, the building in which the most illustrious inhabitants are buried. The cemetery, with its incredible collection of sculptures and mausoleums in all styles, has come something of an open-air museum and thus an obligatory stop for visitors to Milan.
