In a dramatic moment in Broken Embraces, Lena, the actress who is played by Penélope Cruz, appears at the door of Mateo (Lluís Homar), the director of the film she is starring in, with signs of having been brutally beaten. Lena and Mateo love each other but she is married to the wealthy, cruel man who mistreats her. When she begs Mateo to take her “far away”, a jump cut brings the pair to a lunar landscape of black earth and exotic vegetation. Broken Embraces is a melodrama with tragic overtones in which the island of Lanzarote represents both a passing moment of happiness for these main characters and the fatal end of their passionate romance. In a beautiful sequence, Cruz embraces Homar from behind while he takes a picture of the deserted beach. It is El Golfo beach, a semicircle of black sand of volcanic origin, with a lagoon of an intense green colour: Lago Verde or Charco de los Clicos, connected to the ocean by underground channels and whose colour is the result of its great quantity of vegetable organisms.
